The debate isn't about which is "better," but which fits your behavior. Do you park in the shade to keep the RV cool? Or do you want a set-it-and-forget-it system?
Roof Mounted Solar
Best for: Convenience, stealth, and travelers who move daily.
- ✅ No setup time. Always charging.
- ✅ Theft-resistant.
- ❌ Requires parking in the sun (hot RV).
- ❌ Harder to clean and tilt.
Portable (Suitcase) Solar
Best for: Boondockers who stay in one spot and value AC/comfort.
- ✅ Park the RV in the shade, put panels in the sun.
- ✅ Optimizable angle (can get 30% more power than flat roof panels).
- ❌ Setup time required every stop.
- ❌ Risk of theft if left unattended.
The Verdict
For serious boondocking, we recommend both. Max out your roof for travel days and base loads, but carry a 100W-200W portable suitcase to deploy when you find that perfect shady spot under an oak tree.
